Highlights for Saturday, April 6: First plenary session, career fair, and more


Annual Meeting Program Committee Chairs Keith T. Flaherty, MD, FAACR, and Christina Curtis, PhD, MSc, share a few highlights from today’s schedule to help you plan your day.

Welcome to the first full day of cancer research sessions and programming at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2024. Today’s schedule provides in-depth science, as well as a special session on communicating about science to the public. We will also recognize a cancer researcher in the first award lecture of the Annual Meeting.

If you are looking for a new opportunity or growth in your career, the Cancer and Biomedical Research Career Fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. PT in Exhibit Hall F at the San Diego Convention Center. Candidates can upload their CVs to CancerCareers.org, search and apply for positions, and meet with potential employers. The Career Fair could hold the opportunity of a lifetime!

There are 41 educational sessions and 12 methods workshops today, with something to pique everyone’s interest. The workshop Analytic Resources and Applications for AACR Project GENIE BPC Clinico-genomic Data, at 8 a.m. PT in Room 28, will introduce attendees to the AACR Project GENIE Biopharma Collaborative and its clinico-genomic data. A few doors down in Room 31 at 10 a.m. PT, AACR Past-President Elaine R. Mardis, PhD, FAACR, will chair the workshop Innovative Software Analytics for Pediatric Cancer Clinical Testing.

The educational session Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy for Non-Immunologists Session: Strategies for Enhancing Adoptive Cellular Immunotherapy and Reprogramming the Tumor Microenvironment, at 10 a.m. PT in Ballroom 20 CD, will feature expert discussion on CAR T-cell therapy and mechanisms of resistance. For those interested in the business side of research, there are two sessions in the entrepreneurship topic track today that offer insight into getting started and interacting with regulatory agencies.

Join AACR President Philip D. Greenberg, MD, FAACR, and special session Chair William G. Nelson, MD, PhD, at 2 p.m. PT in Ballroom 6 A for Strategies to Effectively Communicate Science to the Public.

The first award lecture of the meeting is the AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research with recipient Steven A. Rosenberg, MD, PhD, FAACR, National Cancer Institute. The lecture is at 3 p.m. PT in Ballroom 20 A.

The Educational Program Pass is not required for the special session or the award lecture—we encourage everyone to attend!

A great day of education wraps up with the evening plenary: Discovery Science in Early Cancer Biology and Interception begins at 4:15 p.m. PT in Hall GH. Two networking events round out the first full day, both at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego: The Minorities in Cancer Research meet and greet is at 5:30 p.m. PT in Grand Hall A, and the Women in Cancer Research 25th anniversary networking reception will be in Harbor Ballroom DEF.
