National Cancer Institute (NCI) Principal Deputy Director Douglas R. Lowy, MD, FAACR, who will replace outgoing NCI Director Norman E. Sharpless, MD, FAACR, at the end of April, will join AACR President David A. Tuveson, MD, PhD, FAACR, for a unique “fireside chat” on Monday at the convention center. Lowy will also deliver a 15-minute presentation titled Research Progress, Funding, and Opportunities during the 45-minute session.

Research Progress, Funding, and Opportunities: A Fireside Chat featuring Douglas R. Lowy, MD, Incoming Acting Director, National Cancer Institute, begins at 3 p.m. CDT in Room 343-345.

AACR Annual Meeting participants will hear some of the first public comments from Lowy, who was named incoming acting director last week after Sharpless announced his decision to step down after nearly five years leading the NCI, which is the largest of the 27 institutes that compose the National Institutes of Health.

Sharpless authored a guest post for the AACR’s blog Cancer Research Catalyst that was published yesterday. In it, he reflects on the remarkable progress, opportunities, and needs he sees for research to end cancer as we know it, and offers thanks as the NCI transitions to new leadership.
