AACR Annual Meeting 2022: Decoding Cancer Complexity, Integrating Science, Transforming Patient Outcomes

The stage is set and final preparations are underway for the AACR Annual Meeting 2022, which hits the road for the first time in two years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of in-person gatherings in 2020 and 2021. This year’s meeting convenes April 8-13 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. For those unable to travel, virtual attendance is also an option.

“The Annual Meeting Program Committee has put together an expansive agenda covering the spectrum of cancer research—from high-impact clinical trials to innovative experimental research—and the latest discoveries that are helping us to decode the complexities of cancer and the myriad processes that contribute to its development,” said AACR President David A. Tuveson, MD, PhD, FAACR.

This year’s meeting theme—Decoding Cancer Complexity, Integrating Science, Transforming Patient Outcomes—is reflected throughout the program, which encompasses the range of cancer research, from cancer biology to translational and clinical studies to population science and prevention, said Program Committee Chair Marcia R. Cruz-Correa, MD, PhD.

“The Annual Meeting program reflects the continuum of the disease process, from the beginning of cancer to the response to therapy to the recurrence of cancer—and survivorship,” Cruz-Correa said.

Among the program highlights are the daily plenary sessions, which serve as the “pillars” of the scientific program, she said.

“The daily plenaries will focus on broad themes, including precancer discovery science, precision medicine and immunotherapy, cancer health disparities, and tumor evolution and therapeutic resistance,” Cruz-Correa said. “Then the rest of the program—the educational sessions, symposia, workshops, and poster sessions—will dive deep into all of the specific topics within those themes.”

The program committee placed patients at the center of the meeting’s content, with the goal of dissecting how factors such as genetics, lifestyle, environment, and disparities affect patient outcomes, while bringing the best science to bear on transforming those outcomes, Cruz-Correa said.

The AACR Annual Meeting is the largest meeting in the world dedicated to cancer research, bringing together the global community of scientists, clinicians, and other health care professionals, patients, and advocates to share and celebrate the advances that are moving the field forward, Tuveson said.

“As we celebrate the return to an in-person Annual Meeting and the opportunity to gather, learn, and network together again, it seems fitting that this year we will also be celebrating the 115th anniversary of the founding of the AACR,” Tuveson said. “It is so exciting that this meeting has come together and that so many people are planning to join us in New Orleans. I look forward to seeing you there.”
